Agios Mattheos is a lovely old traditional village in the southwest of Corfu. It is just 5 km away from Korission Lake and 3 km from Paramonas Beach. Within a few minutes’ drive guests can reach some of the best beaches on the island such as Glyfada, Ermones or Myrtiotisa.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the busier resorts, Agios Matheus is full of picturesque alleys, old stone mansions and pretty squares set in lush green countryside.

Agios Mattheos or Agios Matheus is a beautiful old mountain village situated 25km south-west of Corfu Town. Situated on the slopes of Mount Gamilios Oros, the village is surrounded by traditional olive groves, oak trees and a variety of wild flowers.
From every point of the village, you will discover more picturesque views of the surrounding hills and the sea.
Agios Mattheos is a good place for families, couples and those seeking peace and quiet. Guests have the opportunity to discover the old Corfiot architecture and to get in touch with the Corfiot landscape as they walk through the narrow picturesque streets in and around the village and admire the old houses and churches.
- Explore the narrow village streets and the path to the monastery:
Enjoy a Greek coffee or mountain tea in the morning at one of the local cafes and you’ll feel right at home with the locals over your morning brew. Explore the northern part of the village and walk up the mountain’s narrow streets to the monastery, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. On a clear day you can see the Greek mainland and the islands of Paxos and Lefkada.
- Surrounding beaches:
Check out the beautiful beaches of Paramonas (3km), Prasoudi (5km) and Chalikounas (6km). Perfect if you want to avoid crowds and enjoy clean waters. All are accessible by car, bicycle or on foot through old olive groves.
- Olio Fabrica / Governors Oil Mill:
Visit a local olive oil producer. Governor’s Olive Mill offers guided tours of the factory where you can learn about olive harvesting and production. Enjoy a tasting of different olive oils.
- Byzantine Fortress and the Paleolithic Cave at Gardiki:
3 km from Agios Matheus, at the crossroads to Chalikounas and Kanouli / Prasoudi, guests can visit a 13th century Byzantine fortress. A few minutes’ walk from the fortress will take you to the entrance of the Paleolithic cave of Grava. Visit the cave and wonder how people lived before settlements. A bit of easy climbing will take you to the upper opening of the cave, where you will be greeted by beautiful views of the area and the sea.

Agios Mattheos is relatively easy to reach from Corfu town, both by car and by public transport. There are several ways to get to the village: by bus, taxi, car or motorbike. If you go by bus, the journey takes about 50 minutes and the distance is +/- 25 km. This is the cheapest way to get there. By taxi or car the journey takes about 35 minutes.
